A whole new world

Jacob has entered the world of reading, and he's pulling Zachary in, too.

The boys keep bringing home these Star Wars early reader books (to the chagrin of their mother).  We still haven't watched the movies yet, and since the books seem to be holding their imagination, we'll probably hold off for a little longer.

This second picture reminded me of this next picture that we took of the boys at Jake's second birthday.  Jake has gotten to the point now that he can read books to his brother.  It is very interesting, because Zach is not frustrated by this situation at all.  Zach seems to have this inner confidence that his ability to read will come and is just enjoying Jake reading to him.

In fact, Jake's has made significant progress with his reading abilities over the past few months.  When we met with his teacher the other day, she had a reading chart that showed him going from reading at an early Grade 1 level in November to nearly a Grade 3 reader now.  She was ecstatic and said she's having trouble finding enough material in class to keep him engaged.  This feedback was all very good news to his parents, as with the move to Jakarta and then again to Duri, Jacob has struggled finding his own way.  His successes in school seem to be spurring new maturity, both at school and at home.
